My passion for the treatment of vestibular conditions came from an experience I had in my final clinical rotation of PT school. While in a long-term care facility, my clinical instructor and I received physician orders to evaluate a resident who had dizziness. The clinical instructor asked that I take the lead on this evaluation since I was instructed on the vestibular curriculum more recently. Through a series of diagnostic maneuvers, this patient’s symptoms came on full force (vertigo, nausea, and nystagmus). Truly exciting for a PT student who’s only experience with vertigo symptoms was with classmates attempting to pretend to suffer with this condition as a part of our practical exams! After the successful elimination of this patient’s vertigo in one treatment, the rest is history.
Being a part of people’s recovery doesn’t stop at vestibular rehab though. I believe that a Physical Therapist’s value comes from our ability to properly assess, diagnose, and treat musculoskeletal conditions using our greatest tool - our hands. Manual therapy is one of the most rewarding parts of this profession because it allows for both the patient and practitioner to “feel” the recovery. It’s been a privilege to witness how advanced training in the areas of joint mobilization/manipulation, massage, and dry-needling can change a person’s quality of life immediately.
